For a worry-free life
why

Why

The easiest mobile phone for the elderly to use.

Our Mission

We want grown children to become freer of worries and to stay in touch with their elderly parents. Our personal experience with elderly parents led us to start the development of our One Button Phone because existing communication solutions were not designed from the perspective of an elderly person living alone.

Goals

Many elderly have problems choosing from among multiple choices – even just two choices. Existing wrist and smart phones are inconvenient for the elderly and are difficult to operate. Furthermore, existing emergency notification solutions are based on the misconception that the elderly will take the initiative to call. They disregard the psychological barrier of the elderly to call strangers. In addition, no one likes long-term binding contracts for costly emergency monitoring services. The One Button Phone enables reliable and frequent communication with one’s elderly parent instead of just infrequent emergency calls.

The One Button Phone is inexpensive, convenient and uncoupled from costly emergency monitoring services.

You and your elderly relatives will appreciate the easiest mobile phone in the world to use. The phone has a functional but yet stylish design that does not resemble a clunky monitoring device. The high-quality phone has excellent sound quality, long battery life, cordless charging, splash water resistance and hands-free features. The ergonomics and functionality of the phone are tailored to users with restricted dexterity and mobility. The impressive voice quality and long battery stand-by time are achieved by the patented manner in which the electronics are integrated into the wristband. Our compact and curved design allows for a variety of style options and positions the One Button Phone to become a coveted collector’s item that is perceived as jewelry.

Who else will appreciate its advantages?

Besides providing elderly or less mobile relatives with an easy-to-use communication option the One Button Phone offers advantages for a lot of other occasions. So care homes will appreciate its easy functionalities for their residents being active without accompaniment or for residents with dementia. Parents can use it to stay in touch with their young children relieving their worries. The One Button Phone is as well perfect for workers or sportsmen, who do not want to or cannot handle complicated mobile or smart phones during their activities. Furthermore the One Button Phone is a perfect communication and marketing device for organizers of group travel, fairs and other events. In fact, everyone can think of situations in his or her daily life in which the One Button Phone would be a convenient alternative to a cell phone.

Idea / Background

Our personal experience led us the idea of the One Button Phone. Over years we faced the problem that each of our elderly remaining parents lived alone hundreds of miles away from us. Being over eighty and living alone is a challenge – as well for the caring relatives. Typically a son or granddaughter wants to call his father or grandmother perhaps once a day to check whether everything is so far running without problems. With the moment your elderly relative does not answer your call the worries start to rise. You try it again – and again. What to do? For sure you know the feeling of helplessness when being in uncertainty. What amount of money would you spend at that moment to get relief of your worries and be in touch with your loved one? So we tried to find a wrist mobile phone solution for elderly to solve this problem. Astonishingly all products on the market do not take into account elderly or handicapped. The existing wrist or smartphones need to be operated via Bluetooth with another mobile, or they are very complicated to operate for elderly, difficult to charge, have low voice hands-free quality, or are just too big and inconvenient. Being in the mobile development and business in the 1990s we have the experience in developing mobile devices. So we created the idea to set to life the One Button Phone by ourselves – a perfect device considering the needs of elderly living alone and their relatives.

Product

The One Button Phone will be a wristband phone with GSM quad-band functionality.

Design Goals & Status

What are our design goals?

It is easy to use due to just a single button and provides therefore less risk of operator error. It has simple yet high-quality components. It is robust, splash water resistant and offers multiple style options. The streamlined functionality improves emergency capabilities and supports a long standby time. It offers simple functions appreciated by elderly, silent mode with automatic call acceptance, simple acoustic signal logics, cell positioning, LED signaling and and easy charging with an inductive charger, appropriate for placing on the nightstand.

Status

After analyzing already existing mobile watches and as well emergency solutions we started designing the One Button Phone with focus on usability for elderly. Our ideas led to a concept which we used for our patent application US2012122519 (A1) and an US design patent application.

patent

After that we selected the appropriate components with focus on the quand-band communication module. We have already designed the basic electronics and mechanical structure for the wrist band and the charging station.

Furthermore we are in contact elderly support organizations in Germany to collect feedback regarding usability issues. Now we want to raise further capital via crowdfunding to finish our electronics design and the mechanical tooling for producing the first one thousand serial parts.

Planning

  • January 2015 Start concept development and layout for PCB and components
  • April 2015 First pure electronics protoypes
  • September 2015 Antenna and charging design

  • May 2017 tool making and certification
  • June 2017 production preparation
  • August 2017 series production

Risks & Challenges

Technical Risks

The One Button Phone uses a qualified, existing quad-band GSM module. Therefore the risks regarding phone functionality can be considered as very low. Nevertheless we will have some risk factors regarding the antenna development because we will use a new, patented concept for wrist band integration and module connection. So we will put focus on corresponding tasks in the development, which we consider as standard antenna development issues. Furthermore we will face the typical risks of tool manufacturing and plastic processing.
The tasks of electronic and mechanical development as well as tooling will be carried out by experienced German engineers in the fields of mobile phone development and production.
Finally we have certify the One Button Phone regarding radio and mobile standards which will have a potential for risk factors.

Supply chain

The One Button Phone will use standard components. Nevertheless delay may occur if we encounter longer than expected lead times in part delivery.

Field Testing

During and after field testing issues regarding wearability and usability may occur which possibly lead to adjustments which can prolong the expected delivery schedule.
